PBS's Frontline Episode "The Vaccine War"
A News & Events entry posted on May 5, 2010
PBS’s Frontline episode "The Vaccine War." The episode, which aired nationally on April 27, examines the emotionally charged debate over vaccines that is increasingly being played out through social media such as Facebook and Twitter.
Frontline deftly brings the debate into perspective by including discussions with parents from Ashland, Oregon, where one-quarter of the children entering kindergarten are not fully immunized. One such parent was a mother whose protective instincts for her children have led her to decline vaccinations, even in the face of concerns by the CDC that the low rates of immunization among the community puts them at risk of severe disease outbreaks.
The “Vaccine War” interviewed a number of individuals including anti-vaccine activist Barbara Loe Fisher, founder of the National Vaccine Information Center; researchers investigating the varied vaccine harm hypotheses; and vaccine experts including Dr. Paul Offit and CDC’s Dr. Melinda Wharton, and Kristine Sheedy.
